artist Statement - Mira Oosterweghel
Mira Oosterweghel is a Melbourne based artist, currently completing her honors degree in Fine Art at Monash University. Mira’s practice engages with discourse surrounding the body in contemporary life, often drawing upon her own body to create work. Working across a wide range of medias; Mira’s work often encompasses both sculptural and performative elements.
For the Waking Dream project, Mira intends to investigate the relationships between the subconscious and bodily impulses. Mira is interested in exploring the mind/body dichotomy through her creative process and engagement with the Waking Dream project. In particular Mira will look at her subconscious compulsions and habits (often labeled as the ‘drives’ in psychoanalytic thought) and their physical manifestations on her own body. Mira will engage in hypnotherapy to further understand her compulsions, she will also record and examine her dreams in relation to her moods. Mira is resolved to systematically document her private compulsions and habits.
Mira will draw upon the data she has collected for the Waking Dream project, combining her research with a material and bodily engagement that is integral to her creative process. Mira’s research will inform her intuitive process of making, and be reflected in her final outcome: a performative and sculptural body of works.
